Modern, Contemporary or Traditional Kitchens Styles to Suit Any Home

Three of the most popular kitchen styles, modern, contemporary and traditional fit most homeowners’ ideas of a kitchen that is as functional as it is attractive. Before choosing a kitchen style, decide which overall style is most pervasive throughout the home. Generally, this style will prevail in the kitchen as well.

Modern and Contemporary Kitchen Styles
Modern and Contemporary kitchen styles are based around cabinets, appliances and furniture that have gained the most popularity, present a "wide-open" airy environment and are notable for their quick and easy maintenance. For example, modern kitchen styles have gravitated to larger appliances like cook tops with dual surfaces for cooking and grilling as well as larger telescoping faucets for the kitchen sink.

The detail in modern and contemporary kitchens is accented with bright chrome fixtures as well as white or eggshell cabinets. The refrigerator and freezer combination might be equipped with an ice maker and have an exterior in brushed stainless steel or chrome. Smaller appliances like toasters, toaster ovens and all-purpose mixers coordinate with these larger appliances. Lighting in a modern kitchen would be recessed, often covering the entire ceiling for added light. In a modern or contemporary kitchen style, there is an overall sense of ultra-simplicity that is comfortable and attractive.

Traditional Kitchens
In the style of traditional kitchens, there are several types to choose from: "Country", "Provincial" or "Rustic", all of which expand the homeowner's ability to personalize their kitchen to suit their needs. Country kitchens resemble in many ways, a "farmhouse" style. Cabinets can be painted in bright red or deep navy and accented with ceramic pulls. Oak does well in this kitchen.

Large appliances as well as small fit this traditional style. Country style kitchens fairly shout, "Comfort" in the casual atmosphere it establishes. Provincial kitchens borrow the country look, though with a more ornate detail in furniture and cabinets where woods tend to be dark and accented with antiqued brass. A Rustic kitchen has a style that coordinates well with rattan furniture or simple Shaker-style cabinets.

The mood in a rustic kitchen is achieved by pairing plain wood styling with a "back porch" look often seen in western country homes. A rustic kitchen has an unmistakable "outdoor" appeal brought right into the kitchen. Add in an old fashioned cook stove that has been modernized, a sink with an underskirt, several plain wood cabinets with either glass or tin panels and the rustic look is complete. This is one style that allows a lot of freedom to add the type of kitchen furniture that might be found in a log cabin. The decor of this kitchen makes it serviceable and easy to maintain. Plain, flat surfaces without ornate designs makes this kitchen that fits any family's needs.

Choosing the Right Style Kitchen
When choosing styles for a kitchen, creating the most appropriate design that will be durable enough for the busiest room in the house is the most enjoyable part of planning personal kitchen atmosphere. Other touches like coordinating curtains and table linens complete the style for maximum appeal.

Question by Maripat R: Is it true that you should not use countertop toaster ovens on Corian counters?
I recently had a new Corian counter installed and I wanted to purchase a new toaster oven to replace our old one. I was researching which models were best when I found a review in which the writer stated that you should not use toaster ovens on Corian because the high temperatures could damage the Corian. None of the information we received from the installer said anything about this. Is it true? Our old toaster oven is mounted under the cabinet, but I haven't been able to find any of those anywhere. Does anyone know of any brand that still makes them anymore?

I see NO REASON to not use any toaster on a Corian countertop.

I'm using CORIAN as my SURROUND for my FIREPLACE for GOODNESS SAKES!

My Hamilton Beach Toastation Toaster Oven Review

I have had my Hamilton Beach  Toastation Toaster Oven for over a year now and I just love it. For me this is a great energy saver and space saver. I live in an apartment and need all the counter space that I can get.  Plus for me I don't want to turn the oven on for just a single portion of food.  It is the perfect size for me in my small kitchen.

The Hamilton Beach  Toastation Toaster Oven  is a great 2-in 1 appliance.  As a toaster it has an opening of 1-1/2-inch wide slot that fits  two halves of a bagel, two frozen waffles or two slices of bread. I simply drop my bagel or item to be toasted in the slot, adjust knob to the shade that I want toasted. Then push down the side lever. There is a convenient "cancel" button will stop toasting if I want it to stop.  I can easily switch from toaster to oven by sliding the lever on the front of the toaster oven.

The Hamilton Beach  Toastation Toaster oven provides a knob to control the temperature just like a regular oven. I do not like turning on my large oven just to toast my garlic french bread or other small items. It also saves energy and who is not concerned about energy these days.

The spacious oven holds chicken nuggets, a small single size pizza, french fries and I like to toast french bread cut in half for those great sub sandwiches. I have warmed up chicken in the oven while toasting my bread in the toaster part.

There is an automatic shutoff for safety, and a removable crumb tray.  What I use  for quick cleanup is to line the crumb tray with aluminum  foil  and just throw it away when needed.

Effective Ways to Organize Your Kitchen Counters

In almost every home, there is always one part of the kitchen that is always guilty of clutter, and that is the kitchen counters. Even in the cleanest of homes you will often find that counters are filled with unwanted junk mail, bills, phone books and other papers. You will probably find that most counters also play home to many different small kitchen appliances such as electric can openers, toasters and coffee makers. It's also a place where we often find decorative accessories or a fruit basket. There can also be spices and dry goods sitting on the counter is glass storage containers or decorative canisters. There might even be a cookie jar! Add all these up and you get clutter and shortage of space on your kitchen counter. If you looking to free up space to use as a preparation area or whether you want to just eliminate some items, the best thing to do is to organize it in an efficient manner to avoid having a messy looking kitchen.

Mail can be the primary culprit for the clutter in most kitchen counters. You can eliminate this by placing a basket near the entry door or you can also choose to mount a wall organizer to house all the mail. You may even want to place a small shredder next to the entry way to ensure that junk mail never makes it into the kitchen. To avoid clutter of small kitchen appliances, put only the small appliances on the counter that you use every day. Do you need to display a toaster oven and a microwave on the counter at the same time? Appliances that you don't use on a daily basis can be stored inside a cabinet or any nearby closet.
Although decorative items look cute on the kitchen counter, you should know when to stop adding to the collection of decorative items on the counter. Limit it and your kitchen will look more attractive, especially if it is well-organized. Remove unnecessary items on the counter and free up some space so that you can use the counter for more important kitchen functions.

If you really have to sort mail on the kitchen counter because it has been part of your daily rituals, then using a mini filing cabinet is a good idea. Put the mini filing cabinet on top of your kitchen island or counter so that it can house your mails as well as other papers. Organizing kitchen counters is a priority if you want to achieve a clutter-free and a well-organized kitchen.
